alongside Generals George S. Patton and Omar Bradley with former inmates of Ohrdruf concentration camp reenacting scenes of torture. Eisenhower’s April 12, 1945 visit to the camp, located near the German town of Gotha, was meticulously planned and covered by the media, the concentration camp having been the first to be liberated by US forces eight days earlier. While there had been reports of concentration camps and persecution of Jews and other minority groups throughout Europe by the Nazis, the full extent was not known or documented in such detail until the closing days of World War II. Eisenhower said all the reports he had read had understated the horror he witnessed. Eisenhower requested members of Congress to visit the camp, writing, “The evidence of bestiality and cruelty is so overpowering as to leave no doubt in their minds about the normal practices of the Germans in these camps.” Eisenhower went to great lengths to document his visit, talk with former inmates, and learn from them about their experiences as he feared in the future, individuals would seek to deny such horrors occurred. Journalist and historian Bob Greene wrote, “Eisenhower wanted to bear witness, and in so doing send a message to every corner of the planet: Even in the most ghastly, unthinkable circumstances, compassionate and unblinking eyes must never turn away.”
