Mystery- The Haunted Town Of St. Nazianz, WI St. Nazians was founded by a priest who wholeheartedly believed to helped cursed the town. Over the years, the town has been hit with natural disasters and unexplained phenomena. Father Ambrose Oschwald was fled to Wisconsin in 1854 from religious persecution. The Roman Catholic Church had suspended him from his duties due to “mystical, prophetic, and heretical works.” Already, the scary history of the town is starting to make sense! Using the naked human body in protest is a centuries-old tradition and a specific tactic to garner public and media attention.

From the legend of Godiva riding her horse naked on behalf of the people of her village, to Ukraine protest group FEMEN who stage topless events to bring attention and protest the exploitation of women in sex tourism, marriage agencies, and sexism.

During the Iraq war, large gatherings of people used their naked bodies to spell words and symbols “bearing witness’.

Famously, a transgender woman in Tennessee was arrested in 2011 and actually jailed 3 weeks for indecent exposure because she removed her top in protest of refusal of the DMV to change the sex designation on her driver’s license.

In 2017, over 100 women stripped and stood naked in from of the Argentinean presidential palace in Buenos Aires in protest of violence against women.

There was the Breasts Not Bombs group that used nudity in their anti-war protests.

In Uganda in 2012, women protested the loss of their farming land and have taken to protesting naked on two separate occasions.

So, I am not surprised the woman in Portland used her body in a cause she believes in. It is a pattern interrupt in a conversation about race and police brutality. As shown in the video, the effect works in stunning fashion as the anti-riot police stand confused.
