WHY DIDN'T MAO ORDER THE EXECUTION OF PUYI THE LAST EMPEROR OF CHINA, AND LET HIM DIE NATURAIIY IN 1967?
Why didn't Mao order the execution of Puyi, the last Emperor of China, and let him die naturally in 1967?
Would Puyi's execution, or even imprisonment, have been unpopular?

Well, the Russians executed their tsar and, it didn’t bode well with many nations
overall, Puyi was basically a victim of bad luck, reigning at the time when the Qing were beyond saving, then taken by the Japanese to put a figurehead puppet on the throne of their puppet state (The kwangtung army basically controlled policy) and then watching as Japan lost and getting captured by the soviets
That was how old he was when he came to power as Qing emperor, about 2
he wasn’t responsible for any of the misery that China suffered as he was under regency and the true power was held by generals and court officials, and some people knew that he was also not responsible for manchukuo, so there was no real reason to kill him, he was never in control and never really responsible for the actions of his puppeteers, however many still hated himPuyi with a Soviet officer
however, there was still the people who wanted to kill him, many in fact, Chiang Kai shek , who publicly stated he wanted him publicly executed, he even testified in a war criminal tribunal
however, the soviets refused to extradite him and treated him to chiang, which was lucky because from what I heard, some of Puyi’s relatives his wife as well, were executed or starved by the ROC
then along came mao and swept chiang to Taiwan, and Puyi was handed over to mao
Luckily Mao saw Puyi as valuable, because he was still the last emperor, the epitome of the old order he wanted to destroy, and if he could convert Puyi to communism, it would mean much propaganda for him as he would demonstrate that even the most diehards of the old regime could turn to the light
Puyi, interested in not being executed, willingly cooperated, and maybe even sincerely, changed his ways, learning how to do stuff himself
and in mid 50s, he was apparently so overwhelmed with guilt he considered suicide after seeing what unit 731 did and all the other horrible stuff in Manchuria
by the late 50s, he had given up his old ways and lived the rest of his life as a slightly privileged ordinary citizen
through sheer chance and luck, Puyi was saved from a grisly fate, luckily he died before the cultural revolution
btw if you want to learn more, the Wikipedia article on him is quite informative
