Mafia Boss Joe Masseria Lays Dead on A Brooklyn Restaurant Floor Holding the Ace of Spades, 1931

On a fateful day in April 1931, the notorious mafia boss Giuseppe "Joe" Masseria met his untimely demise on the floor of a Brooklyn restaurant. Masseria, a prominent figure in the Italian-American organized crime scene during the Prohibition era, was gunned down by a rival gang in what came to be known as the "Castellammarese War."

Masseria's life was marked by his rise through the ranks of the Italian mafia, eventually becoming one of the most powerful bosses in New York City. He controlled a vast criminal empire involved in various illicit activities, including bootlegging, gambling, and extortion.

However, his influence and power were challenged by a growing faction led by Salvatore Maranzano. The Castellammarese War erupted as Maranzano sought to overthrow Masseria and take control of the criminal underworld.

On that fateful day, Masseria was enjoying a meal at Nuova Villa Tammaro restaurant in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Unbeknownst to him, four gunmen were lying in wait. As Masseria played cards, one of the gunmen approached him and fired multiple shots at close range.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found Masseria lying dead on the restaurant floor, clutching the Ace of Spades in his hand. This detail, the significance of which remains subject to interpretation, added a touch of macabre symbolism to the assassination.

Masseria's death marked a turning point in the Castellammarese War, with Maranzano emerging victorious and establishing himself as the dominant force in the Italian-American mafia. However, Maranzano's reign would be short-lived, as he too would fall victim to assassination a year later in a power struggle with his own subordinates.

The killing of Joe Masseria on that day in 1931 remains a captivating moment in the history of organized crime, serving as a reminder of the violent and treacherous nature of the mafia underworld during that era.
